CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February is the official month in which Black History is recognized and celebrated. However, at Overton Travel, we do not relegate celebrating the contributions of Black people to just one month, we celebrate them all year long. I often say that travel is a classroom without walls and throughout the year Overton Travel uses travel as a mechanism for teaching Black history that occurred in the US and throughout the world.
A significant portion of Overton Travel trips highlights Black history. Some examples are the Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian trips in which we learned about the influence of Africans in Latin America. In Europe, we learned about Black Paris and Black London. We’ve also done several trips to Africa including South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, and Morocco – all of these trips showcased the marvelous ways in which Africans have been innovators, leaders, and peacemakers. Right here at home in the US we were able to cross the threshold of the Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, DC just a few short months after opening.
I am proud of the diversity of travel experiences that Overton Travel offers. Travel serves so many purposes and I am glad that we incorporate a learning component into many of our trips. Don’t worry if you can’t travel with us in February, you can likely catch a Black history-focused trip another time during the year. Join us on the Civil Rights Tour - from Atlanta to Memphis in September.
