I remember that day in April 1988 clearly. That day when I got my first passport stamp and laid eyes on Mother Africa. The sights of beautiful hotels and pink beaches along with the sounds of French and Wolof were not what I was expecting.

You see, this was my first trip out of North America and my perception of Africa was based primarily on what I had seen on TV and in the movies.

What a pleasant surprise to see that people didn’t live in huts and run around half naked like the images I had been fed all my life. Also, it was nice to see strong, healthy people going about their daily lives; they weren’t all starving with swollen bellies like the images I had seen during the Ethiopian famine.

I was just a student in high school and that experience was a critical “a-ha moment” for me. It was then that I learned not to believe everything that I see on the screen, I needed to get out and go see the world for myself.

A traveler was born.

Like many travelers, I cut my teeth on cruises and all-inclusive resorts. Then the quest to meet the locals and do the things they do and eat the dishes they eat beckoned me to take the training wheels off and venture on to the roads less traveled.

It was these unfamiliar places that fed my insatiable wanderlust and left me yearning to see more of the world through my own unobstructed lens. I’m sure some of you feel the same way.
